Northwest Arkansas National Airport scored the busiest day in its history last week, thanks to the nation’s largest company.
Driven by the events associated with the Walmart shareholders’ meeting and celebrations, XNA saw 6,443 people screened Friday, June 6 at the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint. About 90% of those people are passengers who board flights; the others are airport employees, airline employees and people who obtain special guest passes so they can greet family and friends when they arrive at their gate.
The 5,984 people who moved through the security checkpoint on Saturday, June 7 led to the second-busiest day in XNA’s history.
The previous best had been Oct. 6 last year (5,621). The University of Arkansas beat Texas 19-14 in a home game on Oct. 5, and the airlines were busy carrying unhappy Texas fans back to Austin the next day.
The shareholders’ meeting and related events always occur in the first few days of June, and they’ve led to most of XNA’s busiest days. Seven of XNA’s 14 busiest days have occurred between June 2 and June 8 and seven days can be connected to Walmart shareholders’ events.
The airlines this year amped up their schedules to prepare for all the extra traffic. There were 59 departing flights on Friday; 60 left XNA on Saturday.
The airport has averaged 57 flights a day in recent weeks. Sundays, Thursdays and Fridays often have the most departures.
